It wasn’t until I grew tired of having to pack away the exact same three pumpkins that I bought from the grocery store every single year that I decided it was time for something different.

It was at that point that I decided to make some diy fall decor myself rather than purchasing it, using pumpkins, dried leaves, pine cones, and a few old candles that I had lying around the house.

Here are some of those projects, along with a few things I’ve learned the hard way.

What Materials Can You Use for Fall Crafts?

You probably already have half of these sitting in a drawer or your backyard. That is kind of the point.

  • Pumpkins and gourds, real or faux
  • Dried leaves, either fallen ones or ones you press yourself
  • Pinecones, straight off the ground
  • Acorns, small but useful for filling gaps
  • Twine, for wrapping, tying, and hanging almost anything
  • Burlap, cheap and easy to cut into any shape
  • Fabric scraps, great for no-sew pumpkins
  • Mason jars, for candles, small arrangements, or catching leaves
  • Dried flowers, which hold up far better than fresh ones
  • Wood pieces, slices, or scraps for a base or a tray

Once you have a few of these on hand, you can mix and match them across almost every project below.

14 DIY Fall Decor Ideas

1. Painted Mini Pumpkins

Stacked colorful mini pumpkins in muted green, terracotta, and cream on a mantel.

Grab a handful of mini pumpkins, real or faux, and paint them in a small color set instead of one flat color. Acrylic paint works fine, but give the pumpkin a light coat of primer first or the paint tends to crack once it dries.

2. Dried Leaf Garland

rustic pinecone wreath hanging on a dark wooden front door of a porch.

String dried leaves onto a length of twine using a needle, spacing them out so the twine still shows through.

A quick coat of clear spray sealant keeps the leaves from crumbling apart after a couple of weeks on display.

3. Pine Cone Door Wreath

Framed pressed leaves resting on a wooden shelf next to potted plants and stacked books.

Using hot glue, stick pinecones to a grapevine wreath. Instead of using them in a single line, use clusters. First, bake pinecones collected outdoors on low heat for an hour.

That way, you make sure to kill any insects that might have gotten inside of them.

4. Pressed Leaves Frames

String garland of colorful autumn maple leaves hanging across a wooden fireplace mantle.

Put a few pressed leaves in a book and press them for a week. Afterward, put the leaves into a simple frame by sandwiching them between two layers of glass.

Pressed leaves always turn brown after a while, regardless of what you do, so treat it as an item to replace next fall.

5. Homemade Pumpkin Centerpiece

Tiered pumpkin and pink flower display surrounded by white pumpkins and fruit.

Arrange a couple of pumpkins of various sizes in a tray with some greenery in between. Instead of placing them in a single layer on the tray, vary their height.

When you add candles to your arrangement, leave enough distance between the fire source and the pumpkin.

6. Fall Branches in Vase

Ceramic vase filled with leafy autumn branches displaying vibrant red and yellow foliage.

Choose a few branches with turning leaves and place them in a high vase by your entry point or on your console table.

Real branches will dry up after two weeks, so make sure you refresh them halfway through the season for a more believable look.

7. Sewing Fabric Pumpkins

Fabric fabric-covered plush pumpkins in plaid, corduroy, and cream inside a woven basket.

Use leftover fabric pieces, cut circles, sew them into a bag, fill it, and add twine to form a pumpkin.

This may be one of the easiest no-sew fall decorating ideas because you won’t need any sewing machine at all; glue will do just fine.

8. Autumn Wreath with Flowers

Woven grapevine wreath with orange, red, and yellow dried flowers and lavender sprigs

Create a wreath using dried or artificial flowers in a limited color scheme instead of fresh flowers. Fresh flowers last about a week, while dried or artificial flowers stay beautiful throughout the fall season.

9. Acorn Candle Display

Leaf and acorn-shaped ceramic candle holders on a wooden table with flowers.

Use hot glue to stick acorns on the outside of a glass container. Once the glue dries, place the candle into the container.

In case you choose a flame, ensure there is an opening near the top of the jar so that the acorns do not sit directly where the fire is.

10. Dried Orange Garland

Dried orange slice garland strung along a bright window overlooking a garden.

Cut orange slices into thin pieces and then put them in a warm oven for several hours until the slices dry. Ensure the slices are dry, not wet.

Putting un-dried slices will result in the formation of molds after a few days.

11. Leaf Print Table Runner

Neutral linen table runner printed with autumn brown leaves on a dark wooden table.

Use the actual leaves to print leaf designs on your table runner by dipping the leaves in fabric paint and printing them in a random way. The fabric should be ironed once the paint dries to ensure the designs last during washing.

12. Pumpkin Flower Vase

Glass vase of bright sunflowers and orange berries set inside a hollowed pumpkin.

Use a hollowed-out pumpkin and place a mason jar within before adding water and the flowers.

In this way, the job of keeping water is done by the mason jar; thus, the pumpkin remains hard on the inside and will not rot because of water.

13. Autumn Basket Arrangement

Woven basket filled with colorful gourds, mini pumpkins, pinecones, and oak leaves.

Arrange a collection of little gourds, pine cones, and dried foliage in a basket. If it is meant to be kept outside, then choose an appropriately durable basket, as the baskets made of paper are likely to break due to exposure to rain.

14. Cinnamon Stick Candles

Lit white candles wrapped in cinnamon sticks with pinecones and berries nearby.

Tie cinnamon sticks around the pillar candle with the help of twine, cutting the sticks shorter than the height of the candle.

It is important to create this gap because cinnamon sticks that come in contact with an open flame are highly flammable and pose a real risk.

Final Thoughts

But you don’t necessarily have to go through all of these ideas to give your house a fall feel.

Choose two or three what fit your home best, and do them every year using things you already have lying around.

This is how I developed my collection of diy fall decor projects too.
