Diane.......I do believe in books! and the future of books! And I do believe people are reading them!

And I hope everyone goes to the auction of Dodie Rosekranz......Lordy! What taste!

I was so lucky to be at that party.....(the party of the century......I think!) at the Museum that the Rosekranz's built.....and then after the earthquake.....rebuilt!

for the granddaughter....the most exquisite darling and friendly 18 year old!

she died the next year of the spinal meningitis that happens in dorms........HORRIFIC!

I am so glad she had that magical night in her life..and her mother and grandparents!

So happy to hear from you. Sounds like you will be having a wonderful Christmas...I am so pleased.

THE BOOKS: The Chanel book is absorbing because for the first time, her great-niece and other members of the family and close friends speak...and show images of presents from Chanel herself (how would you like an emerald necklace with diamonds...and a Chanel bag or two?
It's a chic book and an excellent read.
The Louboutin book...is a lark, a laugh, a thrill, I must say. It's large and hugely entertaining. I leave it open at certain pages of shoes I love (the Marie Antoinette. ) His creativity is extraordinary.
S should find all of them at Rizzoli on 57th St in New York...good luck on that.
Tomorrow's post--you will like--the Dodie Rosekrans sale. Many many things very desirable and elegant and such superb taste.

love your booklist, I'll pass on a copy for my captain to bring to Rizzoli next time in NY. It will be good for him to have a checklist for X-mas...I'd love another Chanel on my shelf. (Shoe as well)

Gabrielle Chanel is fascinating to read about, not only was she a perfectionist for fashion but she can still be the role model for any young woman today. She was a modern woman and I guess she payed her share for being!

Louboutins need to handled with care (thats why I keep them neatly on the shoe shelf), yet I need the book.

DEAR GRIFFIN-
Yes notice that I placed 'Nostalgia in Vogue' at the top of the list. It has all the great classic Vogue images--and a very fascinating and surprising retinue of writers.
The Bruce Weber 'confessional' is very touching--but each of the essays is revelatory and absorbing.
Even the Roitfeld book and the Loubtin book (especially) have wonderful insider images and some very touching personal writing.

I was reading through the Chanel book this morning, once more, and find the 'family reminiscence' very reliable. It's 'Auntie Coco' the author/collaborator has recalled--but she does not slide over the reality of Chanel's early life (and the way years).
Glancing over all of the Chanel books, perhaps, leads to some complex understanding of her drive and style.

A beautiful book is a wonderful thing--to be read and touched and given life by the reader.
As a book author, I never spend a moment thinking 'people are not reading books' because people ARE reading books. Passionate readers love books and appreciate a fine book more than ever.
A lavish book, a highly original and creative book is more precious than ever, don't you think.

Dear Terri-
You have a point that these are the books to covet.
I covet them...and I have them in my library. They are very...seductive, very lovable, and indeed, very covetable. Each of them is a meeting with a remarkable person.
Not everyone will feel this way, but given the choice of a wonderful book that I will have for enjoyment and pleasure for my life--or --well, what else so rich in inspiration and ideas can you get for $40 or $60 or even $100? I'll buy the book.
This fall season has been remarkable for new books--and I hope you will find the ones you love.

Diane, what an incredible and inspiring collection of books. I usually get a short stack of coveted interior design books for Christmas (I make a list - and force myself to wait - so that I can give people a list of things I really want!!). I will have to add that Chanel book - I have also read a few on this topic and find her eternally interesting. :)

I suggest: take a close look at all of them.
The Louboutin book is MAJOR...large, with a very original flexed folding box cover...that made it leap out of my hands...amazing..
I found the Corrine Roitfeld book witty and bright--and more than just pretty pictures.
Worth noting: all of the books have an INTERIORS component, and in each one some great INTERIORS lurk waiting for you to discover them (Turbeville, Nostalgia, Vreeland, Louboutin (his chateau) and various houses and families and behind-the-scenes happy snaps...you will love...DIANE
