In your lovely post of life summers on the Riviera, you didn't mention Sara and Gerald Murphy. They were pioneers on the Riviera in the summertime, along with their friends, the Fitzgeralds. They were models for the Divers in Tender is the Night, and their lovely house, the Villa America, is also immortalized by Fitzgerald in that book.

How lucky to have a friend like that and to know that there are still places that have retained the charm of an era. I love the Hotel du Cap in Antibes and had no idea that this charming place existed not too far away.

Your post makes me want to re read my old copy of Tender is The Night, one of my favorite books. Unfortunately I read it the first time when I was too young and read it again when I STILL was too young. Time for a third go around!

Oh, Diane, this post is absolutely wonderful! I am so happy to put so much depth into describing the area, the hotel and your friend. I have many fond memories of Juan les Pins myself. The carousel on the beach front, the old disco, and the restaurants and cafes. My husband and I have spent many months in this area, and I still learned something from you. Brilliant!
