DEAREST FRIENDS!

I am back from Paris and was so inspired by everything--just everything.
I am so pleased to hear your insights on Karen Blixen--and how much her books and her words meant to you.
I urge you all to take a detour and go up the coast from Copenhagen to see her house, and wander in the garden. Then also read the biography by Judith Thurman (who repeats the error of spelling KB's name 'Tania" when in fact it was Tanne (pronounced 'tah-neh' by her Danish family, according to Dorit.
The more I learn about Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen, the more impressed I am.
Reading: just completed 'On Chesil Beach' which I admired so much. It is so subtle, so artful, and so vivid and visual. Also, please be sure to read Ishiguro...anything by him, including 'An Artist of the Floating World' which I just completed. Wow, so exactly portrayed and vividly portrayed. Each page, I wanted to read twice. I hope you've read 'The Remains of the Day' by Ishiguro. A masterpiece of understatement and control. Let's hear your thoughts.

One of the first books I worked on long ago was Peter Beard's "Longing For Darkness: Kamante's Tales" a tribute to the life of Karen Blixen with photographs and captions by her as Isak Dineson.
Kamante was Dinesen's majordomo. The book was reprinted recently.

DDS, I love that you found your treasure. It is fascinating to add the sound of a voice, the way flowers are arranged- it does give us the insights into a woman such as ID.That movie is just a feast for the eyes- I heard MStreep say she was told she might not be sexy enough to portray Blixen ? isn't that fascinating-who would have thought it? I agree with the looseness of arranging flowers and the mixing of them. Another inspiring post. GT

Hello, dear readers--

Pamela...yes, I can imagine that you would do the same lovely, loose arrangments in season. You will see that Karen disliked 'florist arrangments'...which was rather a refreshing sentiment in the fifties and sixties.
Consummate...imagine driving across the Bay Bridge in San Francisco and unexpectedly learning about Karen Blixen...not eh fictional Meryl Streep version but the real one.
