Loved the insider text- and all of it is transporting. The quote that you included by Wintour in her introduction says it all, to me, "...a great fashion picture can tell you exactly what was happening in the world at that time.”. Fashion photography's role of revealing a cultural zeitgeist is as you well know recognized by collectors of fine art photography -and you can see the influence of great fashion editorial in contemporary photographers today- Tim Walker's elaborate productions, Kristy Mitchell; the fictional narratives of Crewdson and Alex Prager -even a show at the V&A on the fictional narrative on contemporary photography. Turbeville is as fresh as paint -or the flaking paint perhaps of her settings of enigmatic figures amidst atmospheric ruins. That is a meme in photography today with every known permutation: 19th c abandoned Cairo palaces, Havana -a Lagerfeld show -even an exhibition at the Tate on ruins. And then there is Penn -a young and elegant Leonard Bernstein photographed in the studio -such compositional clarity, so smart -a modern figure study.
Loved it all.
